On April 8, 2024, Mayor Muriel Bowser signed the Medical Cannabis Patient Card Extension and 4/20 Medical Cannabis Sales Tax Holiday Week Emergency Amendment Act of 2024 into law.

The emergency legislation now in effect:

• Permanently extends the valid period of medical cannabis patient and caregiver registrations from two (2) years to six (6) years. The extension applies only to new registrants and does not retroactively extend to existing registrations. Registration remains free for DC residents and caregivers until August 1, 2024. Applicants 21 years of age and older can self-certify.
   
• Adds four (4) additional days to the annual 10-day medical cannabis sales tax holiday for the current calendar year only. Between April 15-28, 2024, the six percent (6%) sales tax on all medical cannabis products, except for paraphernalia, is waived for both DC resident and non-DC resident patients.

Patients and caregivers are advised that the medical cannabis sales tax holiday only extends to DC’s licensed Retailers. They include:
