ABC Board to Announce Decision on Georgetown Moratorium Zone

The Alcoholic Beverage Control Board (Board) will announce its decision regarding the future of the Georgetown Moratorium Zone at:

  • 10 am on Wednesday, March 30, 2016

Members of the public are welcome to attend the announcement in the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board Hearing Room located at:

  • 2000 14th Street, NW, Suite 400 South, 4th Floor, Washington, DC 20009

In making its decision, the Board will consider all of the public comment it has received on the issue.   

Background

The Georgetown Moratorium Zone is currently in effect until April 9, 2016. The following restrictions apply within the zone, which extends approximately 1,800 feet in all directions from the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and N Street, NW: 

  • No new retailer's license class C or D may be issued to a tavern or nightclub.
  • No retailer's license class C may be issued to a multipurpose facility.
  • No more than 68 retailer’s licenses class C or D may be issued to restaurants.
  • No more than 1 retailer’s license class D may be issued to a multipurpose facility.
  • A license holder outside of the Georgetown Moratorium Zone is not permitted to transfer a license to a location within the zone.

Exemptions from the moratorium, include:

  • All hotels; and
  • Establishments located in or to be located in Georgetown Park, Georgetown Park II, Prospect Place Mall, Georgetown Court and Washington Harbor.
