Extension for Temporary Patient and Caregiver Registrations

Thursday, July 17, 2025

Effective Thursday, July 17, 2025, the valid period for temporary DC resident patient and caregiver registrations will be extended from 30 to 90 days from the date of issuance.

Additionally, newly issued registrations will no longer include a face photo to further protect patient and caregiver privacy. Registrants qualifying as a low-income discount patient will have their eligibility reflected by the acronym “LIDP” surrounded by a red box on their permanent registration only. Previously, registrations for qualifying patients would include a red box around the included face photo.

Please note that applicants will continue to be required to upload a copy of their valid government issued photo identification to verify age and residency, and present a valid government issued photo identification with their patient registration to purchase medical cannabis products.

Digital temporary registrations are issued immediately upon form submission and can be used upon receipt at any of DC’s licensed medical cannabis Retailers. Find a Retailer near you.

Upon registration approval, applicants will be issued a permanent digital registration valid for two years from the date of initial registration. A physical registration card may be purchased for $10 per card.

  • Registration for DC residents is FREE through November 6, 2025. Non-DC residents may register for a nominal fee.
  • Registered patients get access to safe and independently tested cannabis products from licensed Retailers.
  • Patient personal information is protected by HIPAA and not disclosed to any government entity.
  • Eligible patients can self-certify in lieu of securing a healthcare provider recommendation.

Temporary patient registrations issued on or after April 18, 2025, and prior to July 17, 2025, are now valid for ninety (90) days after the date of issuance, regardless of the expiration date printed on the temporary patient registration. Impacted patients or caregivers do not need to request an updated temporary registration nor will ABCA issue new temporary registrations.
